| The
race training programme at Redlands is one of the most innovative school
based programmes available. The school endeavours to train all members of
the programme in basic racing techniques and skills in order that they may
go on to represent the school in competition. Initial race training
for Juniors can be done in Optimist dinghies. Seniors commence in the Puffin Pacer dinghies on Saturday mornings at the sailing
base. Racing skills are also covered to some extent in the various weekly
squad training sessions.
Students who show potential are initially selected to participate as a crew member in one of the inter-school Tri-Series Regattas held on the harbour. From there they can graduate to skippering, and eventually into the school Race team which participates in the annual CHS Regatta each Easter. Each year, all students in the CHS Team attend an intensive 4 day residential Race Training camp prior to the regatta. Redlands has also committed to provide a NSW team for the annual International Cadet National Championships - expanding the competition to four States for the first time. This offers an ideal way to introduce younger students to full national-level, big-fleet racing as crews for the older skippers. The school also provides occasional opportunities for students to represent in MATCH RACING in Elliott 5.9 sports boats and to crew on large harbour and ocean racing yachts. Specialist racing and skills coaches are used for all racing squads. |

| Redlands has introduced high performance race training with a fleet of eight 29er skiffs and two 49ers. The inaugural squad in 2002 of 4 boys and 4 girls, achieved outstanding results at the CHS regatta after only 8 training sessions. The 29er programme introduces students to high level competition through weekly club racing with Woollahra Sailing Club, regular coaching clinics, participation in local and class regattas and the NSW Youth Championships, and culminates with entry in the Australian Youth Championships. The annual CHS regatta also offers class sailing in a more relaxed atmosphere. Our programme provides a clear path for any students wishing to pursue sailing to the highest levels. | |
| Redlands also places great emphasis on TEAMS RACING between schools and is developing over time a specialist squad for this specific form of racing. Ultimately, Redlands aims to provide regular inter-school Teams Racing competition for its students through a home-and-away regatta series over Terms 4 and 1 each year. |
